Why I Decided To Do Away With Screen Time Limits

By Jess On September 11, 2013 · 11 Comments
I have decided, as of like 5 minutes ago, to no longer limit my children’s time with the iPad or Wii. I can hear the gasps and tsk-tsk-tsks from 99% of the audience. What brought this on, you may ask? Well, my 3-year-old is going through a Wii phase. She eats, sleeps, and breathes the Wii. Ask her at the end of the day what her favorite part of that day was, and she will tell you it was playing Wii, even if she didn’t actually get the opportunity to play Wii that day; the Wii is always on her mind. Never mind if she saw a triple rainbow or was given a lollipop at the pharmacy, she just wants to brag about beating the bad guy in her Kirby game. About an hour ago, I made her turn the Wii off. Surprisingly, there were no tears; she [...]

How To Keep Your Child In A Single iPad App Using Guided Access

By Jess On September 4, 2013 · Add Comment
One of the main reasons the iPad is so popular with our Little Ones is because of its touch-friendly interface. I don’t know about your iPad, but there isn’t a single area on ours that isn’t covered with a shiny and somewhat sticky fingerprint. If there’s an opportunity to touch the screen or push a button, my kids are going to take it and run with it. However, there are times when such freedom may not be appropriate or desirable. Case in point: Our family embarked on our last summer vacation to the beach this week. For us, that involved a 6+ hour car ride. It never fails that our Little Ones will get involved in an app and then accidentally press the Home button or some other part of the screen that either takes them out of their app or alters it in some unacceptable way. It’s one thing [...]

BINGO Apps For All Ages!

By Jess On August 29, 2013 · Add Comment
While walking through a junk shop this summer, I came across this beauty: An old-school BINGO ball dispenser. Whether or not to hand over $2.00 for this rusty (and, in some places, sticky) apparatus was a no-brainer. My kids are too young to play traditional BINGO but not too old to have tremendous fun with a turn-handle toy that spits out small colored balls. However, as all us parents know, any game with small pieces has about an average lifespan of 3 weeks in the hands of toddlers (if that!). Thank goodness for the iPad and piece-less BINGO apps! Whether your child knows their numbers and letters or not, there is a BINGO app out there for them. Here are just a few:      Bingo- by Horizon Business, Inc. Straight to the point, this app is your good ol’ traditional Bingo. Select the [...]

Fraggle Rock Game Day App Review – 80s Redux Done Right

By Emily On August 23, 2013 · Add Comment
Driving in the car the other day, my husband and I found a Pandora station that played really good music from the 80s.  He and I were singing along at the top of our longs, giggling, and reminiscing about the bygone days.  We were thoroughly ignoring our kids, who were loudly protesting from the back seat.  Suddenly I had an epiphany: Now I know how my mom felt as she jacked up the volume on the Golden Oldies station while my brother and I rolled our eyes at each other in the back of the family station wagon. Besides the wicked awesome music of the era, there was also a smattering of epic children’s TV shows – some of which are still alive albeit in various computer generated forms (talkin’ to you, CARE BEARS).  One group of characters that has been artfully and educationally recreated is the Fraggles, [...]

Ambient Sound iPad Apps To Soothe Your Child To Sleep

By Jess On August 23, 2013 · Add Comment
Our family has our final summer vacation coming up in less than 2 weeks. As Mom, it is my job to pack not only for myself but for the 5-year-old, 3-year-old, and maybe a little for Dad, as well. While talking to a group of moms at the local park about the joys of packing, the discussion quickly turned into horror stories centering around that one essential item or two that failed to make it into the suitcases. For my family, that essential thing would be a sound machine. I can’t sleep without one, and my children have slept with one almost every night of their short lives. I always thought I was alone in this nighttime habit, but one by one, other moms in this park gathering spoke of their attachment to white noise generators, whether as an aid to relax, mask background noises, or help soothe their children [...]
