Assistive Technology for the iPad

By Marnie On May 17, 2013 · Add Comment
I sometimes feel I’m in the know, as far as, special needs and the iPad go, but I learned something new recently that is very cool! I discovered assistive technology is available to connect to iPads and help disabled and special needs folks read, write, talk, and see the iPad’s interface better. I was aware of assistive technology for computers, but just didn’t realize how much is now out there for the iPad, which is great for the special needs community. Read Along App Review – Recognizing Reading

By Emily On May 17, 2013 · Add Comment
If you’ve ever worked with an early reader, it’s a sure bet that you’ve used the “sound it out” method.  Seeing as how the English language is a beast to learn (even when it’s your native language) this method is one of the easiest and most effective when it comes to phonetics. This app is perfect for the readers who are just starting to “sound it out”.  Most of the sentences are free of grammar, capitalization, or big words with difficult letter combinations (“i” before “e”, anyone?), and this eliminates a lot of confusion [...]

National Geographic Uses Camera Technology to Bring Print Publications to Life

By Faith O'Neil On May 17, 2013 · Add Comment
Recently, we have seen a lot of children’s apps that are making use of the camera on iPads and iPhones. This ‘augmented reality’ takes interactivity to a whole new level for parents and children alike. We recently covered the release of a new art app called SquiggleFish that uses the iPad camera technology to incorporate a child’s artwork into the app. Now, National Geographic is following suit and has just released a new ‘scanner’ app that utilizes the same technology. ‘National Geographic Kids Scanner’ is a newly released app from National Geographic that partners with their print publication, “National Geographic Kids”. Released on May 8th, the new app uses the iPad camera technology to scan the ‘Digital Extras’ symbol in the Nat Geo Kids magazine to receive more information about the article via their phone or tablet. By scanning the Digital Extras symbol, kids will be able to watch related [...]
