Here’s a roundup of stories that we read and loved this week: It’s really not as easy as you think to make money off of kids educational apps Touching hopes and dreams from LGBT families & allies after the historical Supreme Court ruling The definitions of what makes an app truly educational are changing – maybe for the better You might be surprised to hear that this Louisiana town could be the next edtech hub A day in the life of a 3rd grade class that spends 2/3 of their school day on their iPads   We want to hear what you think!  What do YOU think makes an app educational? How to set up Family Sharing on your iPad

By Emily On June 26, 2015 · Add Comment
If you have more than one iPad and/or iPhone in your household, you should definitely set up Family Sharing.  Along with allowing up to six members share photos and purchased apps, it also allows for parents (or a single member) to control spending in the App Store and iTunes. Here’s a quick-start guide to setting up Family Sharing: Start a family group Use these steps on your iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings > iCloud. Tap Set Up Family Sharing, then tap Get Started. Confirm that you want to be the family organizer and that you’re signed in with your personal Apple ID. Follow the onscreen instructions. Invite people to join your family You can add anyone who has an Apple ID to your family, as long as you’re both using iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite on your devices. You can also use these steps to [...]

How to use Guided Access settings on the iPad

By Emily On June 25, 2015 · Add Comment
In my house, using the iPad is an earned privilege.  But guess what? Kids will be kids, and inevitably I’ll find one of them tucked quietly in a corner playing something they shouldn’t anyways. Set up Guided Access Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access to set up Guided Access. From there, here’s what you can do: Turn Guided Access on or off Set a passcode that controls the use of Guided Access and prevents someone from leaving an active session Set whether the device can [...]

Tips for unplugging on family vacations

By Emily On June 24, 2015 · Add Comment
Now that you’ve read our feature about using the family iPad to prevent brain drain, it’s time to talk about unplugging. Every family has its own rules for screen time, but unplugging during family vacation can be hard – especially if you’re using the iPad as a way to distract fidgety young travelers.  But family time is important, and some of my best memories come from vacations and road trips I took with my parents and brother. Here are some tips on how to get your kids to put the device away and make new memories: Set a timer – if your child’s daily media diet includes some screen time, stick to your guns.  If you say 15 minutes, then it should be exactly 15 minutes.  Set a kitchen timer (not a timer on the device) so that everyone knows when the time is up. Bring [...]
