These iOS 8 features will make your iPad even more family-friendly

By Emily On June 3, 2014 · Add Comment
Whether you’re a hardcore techie or an amateur iPad user, you know that Apple is constantly updating and improving its software.  On Monday, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the rollout of iOS 8, with the upgrade being available in the fall for iPads and iPhones.  With the update comes many new and exciting features that can make your family’s daily routine even easier and more productive. Here’s a few cool features that will be available in iOS 8: Family Sharing: Up to 6 family members can share iTunes purchases, which includes not only apps but also music and movies.  Each member has their own account but the credit card has to be the same for all accounts in order to share purchases.  In response to the widespread epidemic of children accidentally purchasing apps and IAPs, this feature also requires any one of the members to get permission for any purchases [...]

#5devs that are making waves with their educational children’s apps

By Emily On May 29, 2014 · Add Comment
We get daily requests to review children’s educational apps – so many requests, in fact, that we don’t have the time or resources to keep up.  As much as we’d love to be able to share our gameplay experience of every app with readers, we simply can’t do it.  However we try our hardest to at least check out each and every app that comes through our inbox and this helps us to follow ed-tech trends. By playing each app, even if only for a few minutes, we’re also introduced to the work of various children’s app developers.  Some are small-name, independent developers and some have more clout (and money!) but still produce amazing educational apps for kids.  It’s a way for us as reviewers, parents, and armchair “experts” (and I use that term loosely) to recognize real talent. Here are 5 children’s educational app developers who we think you [...]

Curious George and the Firefighters App Review – Curiously fun reading!

By Emily On May 28, 2014 · Add Comment
At this point in the 21st century I just have to assume that the majority of you readers know who Curious George is.  If you’re a parent you may know George quite well by now and if you’re not a parent you probably encountered the silly monkey and his yellow-hat friend at some point in your childhood. What started out as a darling children’s book series over 70 years ago has underwent several makeovers before George and his friends became the curious characters they are today. Now the works of HA Rey and Margret Rey have been carefully reimagined in a Tribal Nova app.  Curious George and the Firefighters is the newest addition to the i Read With series, a growing library that already includes three other interactive storybook apps starring another childhood rock star, Caillou.  Tribal Nova has carved out a  decisively large corner of the App Store by producing [...]

#5sites that help encourage preschool computer literacy

By Emily On May 21, 2014 · Add Comment
We’ve been giving you regular #5apps roundups for a few weeks now, but we wanted to add some cool websites into the mix.  As much as my kids use the iPad, my 6 year old son loves to learn about the computer – it was his first tech love before we introduced him to tablets.  My 4-year-old doesn’t really know how to use a desktop computer or even a laptop; she has no dexterity to use the mouse without help and her fingerprints are all over my (non-touchscreen) laptop screen. To encourage her to boost her computer fluency and get her excited about doing so, I’ve bookmarked a handful of sites that let her learn without frustration and remain engaged at the task at hand.  Here are 5 sites that are at the top of my bookmark list: Kidoodle.TV – age-appropriate video streaming site includes age restrictions and time [...]

#5apps that are silly storybooks

By Emily On May 19, 2014 · Add Comment
When it comes to getting my kids interested in reading, the books have to be silly.  Not just funny-noise silly or silly-word funny, but really goofy books.  And quite frankly, I would much rather read the kids an off-the-wall story over a stuffy, long-winded book any day. Here are 5 silly storybook apps that will keep your kids (and you!) giggling:   Don’t Let the Pigeon Run This App – featuring characters made popular by Mo Willems, this app captures the the silliness that Willems’ books are known for (it was the first book my son memorized) $5.99     Moo, Baa, La La La! – this patently iconic Sandra Boynton app is not only goofy, it has also earned recognition from Kirkus and a 5-star rating from Common Sense Media so you know it’s good stuff $3.99     Green Eggs and Ham – [...]
