My 5-year-old has just figured out that his fingers and toes come in groups of five. He’s been counting using his fingers for a while, and he had his little mind blown when I pointed (love a good pun) out that he could also try using his toes for counting over 10. Between his hands and feet he can tackle several different early math learning skills – counting over 10, skip counting (5, 10, 15), addition, subtraction. It makes a parent wonder why, exactly, he would need an iPad to help support these skills. With an app like GazziliMath the question should really be “why not?”. GazziliWords App Review – Get Silly With Gazzili

I am setting forth a challenge. Try to define the word “patience” so that a preschooler can understand it. (And then try defining the word “no” in the same fashion and let me know if said preschooler can understand THAT.) Tricky, isn’t it? We grown-ups (should) know what patience is and we could easily explain it to another adult, but dealing with the younger wordsmith is a whole new ballgame. GazziliShapes Review – Time To Shape Up!

My kids hate the crust on their peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, and like the pushover I am, the sandwiches are always served crust-free. It used to be a hassle to indulge them at lunchtime by de-crusting, but now there are fancy-shmancy sandwich cutters that are pushed into the bread to create shapes. To exact a little revenge sprinkle some knowledge upon my children I make them kindly ask them to name the shapes I cut into their lunch. The developers at GaziliWorld must have also grown weary of painstakingly hacking at hoagies, releasing GaziliShapes to join their lineup of multi-sensory preschool apps. It’s raining and unseasonably cool today, which means lots of snuggling and storytime. My kids are 4 and 6 and both beginning to read, so I make sure that the reading apps we download are just right for their skill levels. I also want to make sure that these apps provide something that a real paper book can’t offer, like interactivity or a new spin on a traditional story. Sometimes reading can be very frustrating – especially for special needs kids like my oldest – so the apps that we use also have to be streamlined and distraction free.
