iPad App Review: Grandma’s Preschool

I don’t want to brag or anything, but I’ve kinda hit the Holy Grail of parenting milestones. Don’t be insanely jealous of me, but both my kids will be in school full time this fall. That means no more half days, no more preschool tuition or expensive day care. It means 8 uninterrupted hours of grown-up time that I can use to actually WORK without updates every 30 seconds on What We’re Doing Now. (I love them but geez they are sharers) The journey to daytime freedom wasn’t an easy one though. In my neighborhood the trend for parents is to have their kiddo skip preschool altogether and enter kindergarten after turning 5, a year later than what’s normally the practice. iPad App Review: Mystery Word Town (Updated)

The last 6 months or so have been a whirlwind! We’re nearing the end of the school year, and when I look back I’m amazed at how far my 7-year-old has traveled academically. This is a child that, at the beginning of the school year, could neither read nor write. He also couldn’t identify half of his lowercase letters (and don’t even get me started on sight words). It should be mentioned that he has an autism spectrum disorder that has made learning a bit of a tricky process for him. That said, he’s now reading at a 2nd-grade level and writing up a storm – according to him he’s even in the process of authoring a book about natural disasters. Because he’s not a traditional learner, my son really appreciates educational apps that provide an element of fun and imagination. This helps keep my somewhat unfocused early reader engaged [...]

BINGO Apps For All Ages!

While walking through a junk shop this summer, I came across this beauty: An old-school BINGO ball dispenser. Whether or not to hand over $2.00 for this rusty (and, in some places, sticky) apparatus was a no-brainer. My kids are too young to play traditional BINGO but not too old to have tremendous fun with a turn-handle toy that spits out small colored balls. However, as all us parents know, any game with small pieces has about an average lifespan of 3 weeks in the hands of toddlers (if that!). Thank goodness for the iPad and piece-less BINGO apps!
