5 Resources to help engage girls in STEM learning

I remember when I was younger – maybe around 10 or 11 – Mattel introduced a speaking “Teen Talk” Barbie doll that said “Math class tough! Party dresses are fun!” There was, as you can imagine (or remember) a huge public backlash and the doll was pulled from the retail market. Critics claimed doll was sexist, misogynistic, and gave young girls the wrong message about gender stereotypes. Still, over 20 years later, there’s a huge disparity between the number of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers and the number of men with the same jobs. At this year’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference it was clear that the testosterone ruled in the audience of developers; the absence of women was even a trending topic on Twitter. Introducting Bo & Yana from Play-i

Programming skills are becoming more important in this tech-centric world. The folks over at Play-i recognized the importance and would like to introduce your little ones to Bo and Yana, a new concept in programming for children. Bo and Yana are robots that are programmed and controlled through a tablet, and the user interface is friendly enough for kiddos as young as 5. As of right now the robots are in the pre-order stage, with packages priced anywhere from $49 to $198. Shipping begins next summer, but reserving now means access to lower prices before they hit the retail market and receive special accessories that won’t be available again. Some packages even allow for your robots to be compatible with Legos, Technics, and Bionicles. Watch the video and prepare to be intrigued and amazed.

Robots Review – Everything you ever wanted to know about robots, but were afraid to ask

One of the pre-requisites for being the parent of a little boy is learning everything there is to know about dinosaurs, race cars, and robots. You need to be prepared to answer every odd question about the three subjects at a moment’s notice. How big are dinosaurs? Do you have to plug in robots? Are helmets really required to drive 200 miles an hour? (In our house we recommend helmets for every activity that requires any kind of body movement, including bath time.) Developed by IEEE, the appropriately-named scientific app Robots is chock-full of anything and everything there is to know about, well, robots.
