VeggieTales: It’s a Very Merry Larry Christmas is an app with as much content as there are words in the title. It features Larry the Cucumber, one of the lovable, vegetated main characters of the popular children’s animated franchise VeggieTales. Cupcake Digital is known for their ability to take relatable, well-loved icons of childhood and transform them into apps that engage young minds.
Larry needs a little help getting ready for Christmas in this activity-packed app, which is a fun departure from Cupcake Digital’s recent Common Core State Standards-based edu-apps. Interactive mini-games include a present memory game, postcard coloring, and matching different-colored ornaments to decorate a Christmas tree.
The game levels get progressively harder as they are played, building on dexterity and hand-eye coordination. All of the game instructions are verbal, as narrated by Larry, which means that non-readers can play just as independently as their older friends.
My 5-year-old son loved Larry’s Locomotive, a game where he had to repair train tracks. My daughter, who’s 3, has an insatiable sweet tooth and really enjoyed playing the candy-shooting game. Both sat down together to listen to Larry’s Silly Songs, some of which they already knew from watching the VeggieTales movies.
Today’s the last day to get the app for $0.99, and it’s one of the best-priced Christmas apps in the App Store. Better than the price is the fact that it comes from a trusted developer with a long-standing history of making quality kids’ apps. This app is kid-tested and Santa approved!
