I don’t know if you noticed, but the holiday season is upon us. In just a few short weeks we’ll be exchanging presents in our novelty pajamas and enjoying the company of friends and family. I don’t know about you, but I am fully unprepared in the gift-giving department so I need some real help – especially when it comes to what my children are going to make for the grandparents. (I’m beginning to think handprint turkeys and paper snowflakes of bygone years have worn out their welcome.) Card Wars: The newest toddler-friendly app from Duckie Deck

When I was a kid my parents sent me away to summer camp almost every year. During these summers at camp I learned several very useful skills, like how to catch non-poisonous jellyfish with my bare hands or which toilet paper is best for wrapping up your counselor while she sleeps. One of the most important life skills I learned was how to play a card game we called War. The rules are simple: split a deck of cards between two people, and each player turns over the top card on the pile at the same time. The higher-number card wins and that player collects their partner’s card, and the event that both players slap down the same number, a “war” is started. We review Gotta Go – the new potty training app from Duckie Deck

Ahhh, potty training. It’s among one of the many joys (that’s sarcasm, folks) of parenting. Of course we’re so thrilled to get our babies out of expensive, cumbersome diapers that we sometimes don’t give a thought to the agony of teaching out little ones how to (effectively) use the potty. And if you Google “potty training” (which is a much better idea in theory than reality, TRUST ME) you’ll find about 3,479 different methods. When my two kiddos were potty training I would have done anything for the help of an uncomplicated, kid-friendly app to help us through the journey. As thoroughly as I checked the App Store, I just couldn’t find “the right potty training app” to supplement the admittedly minimalist approach I was taking to ditch the diapers. Hungry Clipper: Duckie Deck tackles tough-to-teach toddler hygiene habits

I remember when my son was born and marveling over how long his tiny fingernails were. Before we left the nurse told me to make sure to trim them so he didn’t cut himself, but I balked at the idea of trying to cut them myself. I actually went so far as to call the pediatrician’s office to try and schedule a baby manicure – which, of course, the nurse told me was entirely unnecessary. So after much fretting I decided to try it myself, and while I didn’t cut anything other than nails the process took nearly an hour. Fast forward to his toddler days: now I had a wiggly, impatient ball of energy who couldn’t sit still longer than 3 seconds at a time. Dinosaur Mix – get prehistoric with this fun app

Recently my kids became re-obsessed with dinosaurs. This is not unfamiliar territory; throughout their preschool years they have covered this obsession several times over until they move on to something much more interesting, like trains or barnyard animals. Now, though, they’re both now old enough to start to learn about the actual science of dinosaurs instead of just laughing at jokes about how hard it must be to use the bathroom with little T-Rex arms and have asked some seriously mature questions (the word “species” was thrown around at some point, I was impressed). While new Cowly Owl app Dinosaur Mix isn’t exactly Jurassic Park revisited, it is a spectacular jumping-off point to begin off-screen discussions about dinosaurs.
