iPad App Review: Crayola Color Alive

I’ve expressed several times over that I’m no fan of ‘freemium’ apps aimed at children and for obvious reasons. It is so frustrating to download a seemingly free app only to find out that a vast majority of the features need to be unlocked with in-app purchases. Yet big, trusted brands continue to use the ol’ bait-and-switch method of padding profit margins by exploiting the brand that people of come to trust over the years. And yes, I’m talking to YOU, Crayola. One of my most vivid childhood memories is watching a clip on Sesame Street about the inner workings of a Crayola crayon factory. (Incidentally this clip is still shown on the show, I saw it just last week.) I even refer to all crayons as Crayolas, and it’s the only brand I buy for my kids when it comes to restocking their arts & crafts supplies. Trust me [...]

‘Tunetrace’ Turns Children’s Drawings into Beautiful Music

Lately, I’ve been on a big ‘Augmented Reality’ app kick. I (and my kids) think there is nothing cooler than an app being integrated into something real world. Recently, we saw ‘SquiggleFish’ and its ability to incorporate children’s drawings into the app via camera technology. We also covered the newest app compatible toy called ‘iHeart Locket’, which uses a physical locket to send a signal to the iPad, unlocking and locking a fun diary app. Now, an app called “Tunetrace”, created by the brilliant minds at Queen Mary, University of London, is taking your child’s drawings and turning them into beautiful music. Tunetrace essentially takes drawings from the real world (anything your child has drawn on real paper) and scans them into the app. Once scanned, Tunetrace converts the drawings based on their line intersections and turns them into audible sounds and music. National Geographic Uses Camera Technology to Bring Print Publications to Life

Recently, we have seen a lot of children’s apps that are making use of the camera on iPads and iPhones. This ‘augmented reality’ takes interactivity to a whole new level for parents and children alike. We recently covered the release of a new art app called SquiggleFish that uses the iPad camera technology to incorporate a child’s artwork into the app. Now, National Geographic is following suit and has just released a new ‘scanner’ app that utilizes the same technology. ‘National Geographic Kids Scanner’ is a newly released app from National Geographic that partners with their print publication, “National Geographic Kids”. Released on May 8th, the new app uses the iPad camera technology to scan the ‘Digital Extras’ symbol in the Nat Geo Kids magazine to receive more information about the article via their phone or tablet.
